At Cranbourne Primary School, we believe learning extends beyond the classroom. We provide students with a broad range of opportunities to explore their interests, challenge themselves, develop new skills, contribute to their school and experience success in different ways. From academic extension and enrichment to leadership, sport, music, clubs and learning beyond the school grounds, we aim to provide opportunities for every student to find something that interests and inspires them.
Student leadership at Cranbourne Primary School is about much more than wearing a badge. Our student leaders are given genuine responsibilities and opportunities to contribute to the life and direction of our school. Our leadership opportunities include School Captains, House Captains, Events Captain, Publicity Captain, Inclusion Captain, Environmental Captain and the Student Representative Council (SRC).
School Captains represent the student body at school and community events, lead assemblies, work alongside the SRC and provide regular reports to School Council. Our other student leaders take responsibility for areas including school events, peer support and inclusion, environmental initiatives, school promotion, lunchtime activities and building House spirit. Leadership opportunities begin in Grade 5 through our House Captain positions, providing students with an opportunity to develop their skills before progressing to senior leadership roles in Grade 6.
Across all roles, our student leaders are expected to model our school motto, Work hard, be kind, feel proud, and demonstrate our PRIDE values of Persistence, Responsibility, Independence, Discipline and Excellence.
Australian Mathematics Competition
Students in Grades 3–6 have the opportunity to participate in the Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC), one of Australia's longest-running and best-known mathematics competitions.The competition provides students with an opportunity to challenge their mathematical thinking and problem-solving skills through problems designed to extend them beyond routine classroom mathematics. Cranbourne Primary School subsidises entry for participating students in Grades 3–6, helping make the opportunity accessible to students who would like to challenge themselves.
Victorian High-Ability Program
Eligible students in Grades 5 and 6 may be selected to participate in the Victorian High-Ability Program (VHAP), a Department of Education initiative providing extension in English or Mathematics. Students participate in a 10-week online program delivered by Virtual School Victoria, working with other high-ability students from across Victoria on challenging learning designed to extend their knowledge and thinking. At Cranbourne Primary School, participating students are supported by a dedicated staff member and our High Ability Leader throughout the program.
Children's University
Students in Grades 3–6 can participate in Children's University Swinburne, with participation subsidised by the school and open to all interested students in these year levels. Children's University encourages students to explore their interests and undertake self-directed learning beyond the classroom. Students receive a Passport to Learning and collect hours by participating in approved extracurricular learning experiences at school, online and within the wider community. Students who reach the required learning milestones have the opportunity to celebrate their achievements at a formal graduation ceremony at Swinburne University.
Intervention, Enrichment and Support
We recognise that students learn at different rates and require different levels of challenge and support at different points in their learning. Alongside differentiated classroom teaching, Cranbourne Primary School provides targeted intervention, enrichment and extension opportunities to respond to student learning needs. These may include small-group or individual support, targeted intervention programs and opportunities for students to extend their learning beyond the expected curriculum.
Our aim is for students to receive the right level of support and challenge to continue making progress, build confidence and experience success.
Music and Performing Arts
Students have opportunities to develop their confidence, creativity and performance skills through experiences including our school choir and iRock music program.
Students perform at school and community events throughout the year, providing opportunities to work collaboratively, develop performance skills and represent Cranbourne Primary School within our wider community.
Sport
Sport provides another important avenue for students to participate, challenge themselves and represent their school.
Throughout the year, students participate in a range of sporting opportunities, including Cross Country, Athletics and Lightning Premiership, with opportunities for students to progress to district and higher levels of competition. These experiences support the development of teamwork, persistence, sportsmanship and school pride alongside physical skills.
Recess and Lunchtime Clubs
Learning, connection and belonging also happen in the playground! At Cranbourne Primary School, students can participate in a range of recess and lunchtime clubs designed around different interests. Our clubs provide opportunities for students to try something new, pursue an existing interest, connect with other students and enjoy structured activities during break times.
Through our clubs, we continue to grow and develop the range of clubs available, responding to student interests and creating more opportunities for students to participate, connect and contribute to school life.
At Cranbourne Primary School, we want students to leave primary school having experienced much more than what can be measured in a classroom. Through leadership, challenge, creativity, sport, enrichment and new experiences, our students have opportunities to discover what they enjoy, what they are capable of and how they can make a positive contribution to their community.
